admission.

i admit: i really don't like the freethinkers. now, i know i'm not supposed to hate anyone based on their religious belief, but i really don't like them. i find their philosophy flawed and their flyers border on offensive.

also, judging from this week's quest i wish to raise the question: do the freethinkers suffer from a persecution complex?

also: i am not an asshole in real life. everyone loves me. squirrels run up to be my friend. my life is rainbows and warm puppies.

I must admit, the color flyers rub me the wrong way, and I guess I'm kind of annoyed by all the hoo-hah that's surrounded them. I wouldn't mind if I don't have to hear about them again because it seems there's another article about them in each new issue of the Quest, and every other day another attack or defense of the club. However, I do not like how some people have been antagonizing them, and in particular I don't like that those books were taken from their drop box.

Why... why... WHY does L.Z. think that writing an article for the Quest stating that she VOTED FOR BUSH is going to help her in any way? I think you're on to something with the persecution complex theory.

I have a question:

by "conservative stands" (sic?) on abortion, would she mean an *actual* conservative stance, as in "government get the hell out of my life" or a Christian Right "conservative" stance, as in GOD SAYS DON'T KILL FETUSES, YO.

I'm thinking the latter, and I'm curious as to how one would reconcile that with a freethinking point of view. In any case, it might not have been a smart thing to mention.

Yeah, I'm curious about that too. She's stated that she has a conservative stance on abortion, affirmative action, and foreign affairs... it seems like she's a bit, well, Republican.

What the fuck difference does it make who she voted for? Maybe she's honest about her political credentials and instead she gets slammed? Wow. That's great. Fuck face.

It makes a lot of god damn difference. You've read that NYT Mag article about the "reality-based community", haven't you? Who the fuck are you, anyway? I'm fascinated.

I thought this was the god damned flame area. And you're complaining because you feel a bit scorched. Fucking whiner.

I'm not complaining. I'm making fun of your cowardice, dumbass. I'm not offended in the slightest by your semi-coherent drivel. Fucking moron.

Anonymous does get 3 points for spelling "whiner" correctly, though.

lord almighty I feel my temperature rising.

I asked about the flyers because they blew my mind.

Apparently they were deliberately provocative and not intended to produce anything beyond a response and interest in the group.

This is the kind of thing that makes me not inclined to like them. I don't quite understand where doing things to get attention means you get to bitch about all the attention you're getting.

The day puppies and squirrels show affection to a TROGLODYTE is the day L.Z. gains the respect of the read community.

And it's okay to hate someone based on their philosophy even if it serves as a religion replacement. It's something that they have thought out and determined to be sound and justifiable, not some wiley collection of crazy stories their parents handed down to them.

i never said that puppies show any affection to me. i am literally composed of puppy carcass, brought to life through a freakish frankenstein-ish experiment powered by rainbow.

and squirrels run up to me because i camouflage myself as a nut. they get close enough, i catch them, and feed them devil's food cake while we sit and watch oprah (ahem. who is, by the way A SUCCESSFUL BLACK WOMAN SUFFERING FROM WEIGHT PROBLEMS). i plan on expanding the u.s. obesity beyond human "culture" into all spheres of american mammalia.

and we musn't forget the part where oprah's existence proves an utter lack of class hierarchy in america.....

basically. Or at least according to the quote supplied by Steinberger. No hierarchies of class or race. Although, to be fair, I think that his original meaning was something along the lines of - "see, here in America (the best Nation in the whole of forever, by the way) we don't have those nasty heierarchies. Well, at least we don't have legal or institutional barriers to sucess. See, in other countries you're born poor and you're gonna die poor. Not necessarily true here. See, look at Oprah. Proof positive that America is free and open for all good folks." Please note that I have not read the original work, and I'm paraphrasing deeply.

there are a few problems in that statement....

[info]leahchick

December 11 2005, 02:49:58 UTC 6 years ago

well. heck yea. I think thats why the quote/idea was invoked by Steinberger in the first place. And maybe why the audience booed when he said that...

I quote: "No group in America is oppressed."
Or, I quote more properly, "NO GROUP IN AMERICA IS OPPRESSED!!!!"

I have been directed here by a reedlj link and do not read this community usually because you're all nutbars. JAY. For the record.

.....YOU ARe SHITTING ME re OPPRESSED, I mean you gotta be FUCKING KIDDING

And yes, metaphorically speaking, we are all cutting class and smoking behind the gym here. The standards of discourse here are lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut.

I'm not even at Reed, and just what I've seen of them on the internet is pretty irritating. They strike me as typically sophomoric, reactionary "philosophers" who are so taken with the notion that there really is no law requiring them to be Christian that they cream their pants reading Nietsche under the covers at night.

I don't know, a lot of times I used to interact with people at Reed and think "Man, I think I went through this phase in middle school... are you still doing it?" That's pretty much how I categorize the freethinkers. I remember when I was very adamant about not being Christian, and how dumb organized religion is, etc., but I also got over it and moved on with my life.

I think what irritates me the most about the little exposure I've had to them is how much I nominally agree with the idea that alternatives to organized religion are good, and encouraging people to think for themselves is good, and yet I completely disagree with the way they are approaching. I really don't like having to vehemently disagree with someone whom I should be in the same camp as.
